Perseverance

Life is a lot about perseverance. Not that we particularly like persevering, it certainly likes us. Sometimes we have to grin and bear up and continue putting one foot in front of the other.

How  do we do it without getting discouraged? I wish I could say I have a remedy or a cute little positive way to handle it, but that would be fake and more saintly than I am. I do know that counting my blessings keeps me on the bright side.

God, alone, is reason enough to persevere on. He knows what I do not know. He is accomplishing something in my life that I clearly am not fully understanding. But I don’t have to understand. I just have follow, trust, and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way; to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

And that’s okay. The longer I live in the faith, the more I realize this walk with Jesus is a walk of love, first, with healing grace, second. I cannot do it well without him. The bumps in the road, be they big or small, are part of the journey and are to be expected.

Those times when we get stretched take us to our Father God in prayer and supplication. He, being a good Father, responds appropriately. He gives us what we need for the meantime and let’s us know he will be the Supplier of our needs and Comforter when we need comforting.

Perseverance takes a measure of endurance mixed with fortitude and determination. After a particular difficult time, we can look back and see the hill we climbed that was formidable and sometimes scary. We didn’t know what we would have to do or how crooked the path would be, but we learned to trust our Guide, because he is also a good and faithful friend who knows the way and never abandons us.

He will never leave us or forsake us. Picture the Good Shepherd offering his hand to assist you as you persevere through the rough patches. The thought makes me smile. He is that close even when he seems a million miles away.

“Joy to the world, the Lord has come; Let earth receive her King. Let every heart, prepare Him room; And Heaven and nature sing, and Heaven and nature sing, and Heaven and Heaven and nature sing.”

May God be with you and yours, my friend, as you persevere on today.

Just think, someday … it will be worth it all when we see Jesus.
